Why Anesthesia Matters in Oral Surgery
Oral surgery procedures often cause anxiety for patients — especially when it comes to fear of pain or discomfort. With the right type of anesthesia and a highly trained surgical team, we can help you:
- Stay relaxed and calm throughout your procedure
- Experience little to no memory of the treatment
- Avoid discomfort during and after the surgery
- Minimize stress-related health risks
- Improve recovery with advanced pain management techniques
Our Anesthesia Options
All anesthesia is administered and monitored by our board-certified oral surgeons — each trained in hospital-based anesthesia during their surgical residencies.
Local Anesthesia
Used to numb a specific area of your mouth. You remain fully awake, but feel no pain during treatment. Ideal for simple tooth extractions and minor procedures.
Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)
A light sedation option that’s inhaled through a mask. It reduces anxiety, and wears off quickly, allowing you to drive yourself home after most procedures.
IV Sedation (Twilight Sedation)
Delivered through a vein, IV sedation helps you enter a deep state of relaxation. You remain conscious but typically don’t remember the procedure. A popular option for wisdom teeth removal and other extractions.
General Anesthesia
A deeper form of sedation that allows you to sleep through the entire procedure. This is often used for complex surgeries or full-mouth procedures such as full-arch treatment.
We perform general anesthesia in-office using hospital-grade monitoring equipment and emergency protocols, ensuring the highest safety standards in outpatient care.
Is Anesthesia Safe?
Absolutely. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are the only dental specialists who receive hospital-based training in both surgery and anesthesia administration. At Oral Surgery Partners, all of our surgeons are certified in:
- General Anesthesia
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
- Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS)
Your health history, medications, and concerns will be reviewed thoroughly before your procedure to determine the safest and most effective sedation plan.
Advanced Pain Control Options After Surgery
We offer a range of non-opioid and long-acting pain control techniques, including:
Exparel®
A single-dose, non-opioid medication injected during surgery that provides up to 72 hours of pain relief, minimizing the need for prescription painkillers.
L-PRF (Leukocyte-Platelet Rich Fibrin)
An advanced biologic treatment that uses your own blood to accelerate healing and reduce inflammation. Visit our L-PRF Platelet Therapy page for details.
Who Is a Candidate for Sedation?

Frequently Asked QuestionsAnesthesia & Pain Relief
Is IV sedation the same as general anesthesia?
No. IV sedation allows you to remain semi-conscious and responsive, while general anesthesia puts you into a controlled, temporary unconscious state. Both options are offered in our office and tailored to your needs.
Can I eat before anesthesia?
Typically, you should not eat or drink anything for 6 to 8 hours before receiving IV or general anesthesia. We’ll give you detailed instructions during your pre-op consultation.
How long does sedation last?
The effects of IV sedation wear off within a few hours. You’ll need someone to drive you home and stay with you for the rest of the day. Nitrous oxide wears off within minutes, and general anesthesia recovery is longer.
Is anesthesia safe for kids and teens?
Yes. We regularly provide sedation and anesthesia for teens undergoing procedures like wisdom teeth removal. Our surgeons are certified in pediatric life support and monitor all vitals continuously during treatment.
Will insurance cover anesthesia?
Dental insurance plans often cover local anesthesia and may contribute toward IV or general anesthesia depending on the procedure. We work with most PPO plans and offer financing options for out-of-pocket costs.
