Our board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeons specialize in same-day tooth extraction and implant placement, restoring your smile and protecting your long-term oral health.

When Are Emergency Implants Needed?

Emergency dental implants are appropriate when a tooth is lost or cannot be saved due to:

  • Traumatic injury (sports, accidents, falls)
  • Severe infection or abscess
  • Cracked or fractured teeth beyond repair
  • Advanced decay requiring immediate removal
  • Failed previous dental work (e.g., crowns, bridges, root canals)

If you’ve lost a tooth or been told you need an urgent extraction, you may be eligible for same-day dental implant placement.

Same-Day Dental Implants: How They Work

Traditionally, patients would wait weeks or months between tooth removal and implant surgery. However, with modern surgical protocols and digital planning, many patients can now have:

  • Tooth extracted
  • Implant placed
  • Temporary tooth attached

...all in the same day.

This is called immediate implant placement — and it can preserve bone, reduce treatment time, and eliminate the need for multiple procedures.

To find out if you're a candidate, schedule a consultation with one of our surgeons.

Why Fast Action Matters

When a tooth is lost, the surrounding bone begins to deteriorate almost immediately. Within weeks, significant bone loss can occur — making future implant placement more complex or even impossible without grafting.

Immediate implant placement after extraction helps:

  • Preserve the natural bone
  • Reduce facial collapse
  • Avoid shifting of adjacent teeth
  • Maintain esthetics in the smile zone
  • Reduce the total number of surgical visits
  • Provide faster emotional and functional recovery

Are You a Candidate?

Emergency implants may be possible if you:

  • Are in good general and oral health
  • Have adequate jawbone at the extraction site
  • Have not waited too long after tooth loss
  • Need a front or back tooth replaced
  • Want a fixed, non-removable solution instead of a flipper or bridge

Not everyone is a candidate for immediate implants — but we will assess your eligibility during an in-person evaluation with our experienced oral and maxillofacial surgeon near you.

What to Expect During the Emergency Implant Visit

1. Emergency Evaluation & Imaging

You’ll receive a 3D scan and consultation with a surgeon to determine the severity of the issue and your suitability for immediate implant placement.

2. Extraction (If Needed)

If the damaged tooth is still present, it will be gently removed by a skilled oral surgeon using precise surgical techniques to protect surrounding bone and tissue.

3. Implant Placement

A dental implant is placed directly into the socket of the removed tooth. In many cases, a temporary crown or healing cap is placed to maintain esthetics and function while healing occurs.

4. Healing & Final Tooth Replacement

Once the implant fully integrates with your jawbone (typically 3–6 months), your general dentist will place the final crown for a permanent, natural-looking restoration.

Frequently Asked QuestionsEmergency Implants

How quickly can I get a dental implant after losing a tooth?

In many cases, same-day implants are possible — but time is critical. Contact an oral surgeon immediately for evaluation. The sooner you act, the better the outcome.

Is it painful to get an emergency implant?

We offer IV sedation and general anesthesia options to make the procedure completely comfortable. Most patients report minimal discomfort afterward.

What if I’m not a candidate for immediate implants?

If immediate placement isn’t an option, we may perform socket preservation with bone grafting and place the implant after healing. This still provides excellent long-term outcomes.

What should I do if I knock out a tooth?

Keep the tooth moist in milk or saliva and seek help immediately. If the tooth can’t be saved, we may be able to replace it with a dental implant during the same visit.

Will insurance cover emergency implant treatment?

Coverage varies by plan. We work with most major PPOs, including Delta Dental PPO, and offer financing options through CareCredit® for qualified applicants.
